It's raining outside. I can see the rain.

My station is not reporting rain -- not to Weather Underground, not to my reporting software, and not even to the station base. I think the rain gauge is fouled up.

It also had some down-time on the outdoor sensor (temperature, humidity), due to a dead back-up battery. That stopped my software from reporting all data, but after I changed the battery and reset the software it was working again.

That gave me the idea that I might need to replace the back-up battery on the rain gauge too, so I tried that. To test it, I poured a trickle of water into the gauge, until I heard the rain bucket tip. I waited for it to report to the base, then checked the base for recognizing the rain. It hasn't recognized rain, so it seems something else is wrong. I guess I'll put the old back-up batteries back, since it looks like they're OK, and the sensor itself is messed up.

Now, what might be wrong with the rain gauge? I suppose I'll have to take it apart and see if there's anything visibly wrong.

Early yesterday morning, around 01:37, my computer started getting really slow, and uploaded weather information only once more, at 02:03.Sometimes after Windows download an update, as it typically does on Tuesdays, it starts to behave badly, slowing down to the point where every keystroke or mouse click is tedious. I concluded that was the case yesterday morning, and rebooted. The reboot was slow and tedious, and after Windows came back to life it started telling my...

It looks like there was an abrupt change in the weather overnight. There had been very little wind in the past several days, but right around 03:00 the wind suddenly picked up. Then two hours later, the rain bumped up from steady rain to a downpour. (No, that wasn't snow-melt; there was no snow left in my rain gauge.) The rain slowed to a trickle by morning, and now it's partly clear.

The snow continued through the night, and changed to rain in the afternoon. I was up in the middle of the night, and wanted to make sure that snow didn't accumulate to the point of topping over the edge of the rain gauge, so I warmed it with a hair dryer. That warming resulted in rain measurements at 02:26, 02:31, and 03:02. That didn't melt all the ice, but it took care of enough that I felt safe giving up on it and going to sleep. The counts at 09:24, 12:05, 13:00,...

In addition to the problems with snow in my rain gauge, it looks like my web camera stopped uploading after 12:13:31 on the 17th, and didn't resume until 11:58:33 today, after I noticed that it was inactive. My best guess about the problem is that it's something to do with Fwink, because when I shut down Fwink and started it again my web camera started showing images again.
