Tropical Storm Twentytwo will continue on its northwestward path towards northern Laos and is expected to make landfall late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Upon landfall, it will decrease from 40 mph winds with 52 mph gusts to a tropical depression with 29 mph winds gusting up to 40 mph. Expect strong winds, heavy downpours, coastal flooding and dangerous surf in Laos, Vietnam, and southwestern China. This system will bring overcast skies to Hong Kong with a high near 82(F)/ 29(C) but no rain is expected. To the north, high pressure will remain over most of China on Thursday. Thus, expect mostly sunny skies with warm conditions. Beijing and Shanghai will both see a high in the mid-70s(F)/ 26. The Korean Peninsula and Japan will also be dominated by high pressure, thus pleasant conditions are expected. Tokyo will see a few scattered clouds and a high near 69(F)/ 21(C) as a low pressure system leaves the region.
In Australia, a high pressure system will hover over New South Whales on Thursday. The system will bring plenty of sunny with pleasant conditions to most of the continent. However, onshore flow in the east will bring abundant moisture to Queensland and allow for overcast skies and widespread scattered showers north of Brisbane. Sydney will be partly cloudy with a high near 66(F)/ 19(C). New Zealand will continue to see wet weather on Thursday due to a lingering low pressure system.
Hurricane Hazel made landfall on this date in 1954 over the Carolina coastline. An incredible storm surge was enhanced by the highest lunar tide of the year. The storm took out every pier from Myrtle Beach, S.C. to Cedar Island, N.C. In the end, 98 people died due to the hurricane and damages topped $250 million.
